Brilliant Upgrades by a Brilliant Mind on a DUM computer!

One of the very best upgrades you can make for your computer is to install more memory. Usually it’s more cost-effective than almost any other upgrade you might look at. And isn’t that the purpose? To get the most bang for your upgrade buck.

Not only is installing more memory pretty cheap, most people can get it done for between $50-200. But, it’s also the most effective as well. It can improve your entire computing experience. From browsing the web, to doing multi-tasking, having more than one computer program running. It’s especially important in families where the computer is used by different users. As that can be very memory intensive.

In today’s computing world, you need at a very minimum 512MB of memory, and if you’re going to be using Windows Vista, you’d be better served with at least 1GB of memory. While you’ll find high-end systems with 2-4GB or more of memory.

What you must keep in mind is that sometimes it’s difficult to match the memory you need with the computer. You have to have the right size, and picking the right speed memory makes a difference as well.

Take note that laptop memory is generally a different size than what you can find in desktops. So, you won’t find it interchangeable. The first place to look is in the users manual or any documentation you have with the computer, or on the manufacturer’s website.

But, even that’s not enough. It’s important to know that there is space in the PC for the extra memory. Each computer can have from 1 to 4 or more slots for memory. Once you match the memory to the computer, now you have to verify that there is room for the extra memory. For instance if you have two memory slots, and the computer came with 512MB of memory, but it has no slots available. If you needed to get 1GB of memory, you could either buy two 512MB slots and replace what’s already in there, or you could buy one 1GB stick, and replace one of them giving you a grand total of 1GB + 256MB. Complicated I know, but necessary so that you don’t waste your money.

A fantastic resource for looking up what kind of memory you should use is www.crucial.com. They have many of the makes and models of all major manufacturers, and provide guidelines for purchasing and installing more memory.

Once you’ve done it once, you’ll quickly realize that upgrading your memory isn’t that difficult and you’ll find your computing experience to be much more pleasurable. Getting a good memory upgrade can prolong the useful life of even ancient(4-5 year old) computers by allowing them to be functional for years longer. If you find your computer processes to be slowing down, and you’re waiting around for what seems like hours for the most trivial tasks, exploring a memory upgrade might be an important step for you.
